"Land of the Free? is actually the 2nd piece I made in this
series.  I credit the emotions behind this piece to a wonderful
professor at De Anza College whom I consider my mentor.  If it
were not for Professor Wilkins-Greene, my eyes might still be
closed to the governmental and social injustices in this country.
Without her classes I may have never learned that I, too, could
be an activist for social change.  For her mentoring I am
eternally grateful."

"Although I am not African-American, I felt that I
needed to have this piece portray an African-American
woman. Because of all the people in this society, I believe
that it is the African-American woman who must carry
the heaviest burden of all."

"For the model, I chose a woman who worked in a building where I once worked.  Her
appearance and stature were of strength and great self assurance.  Her features and
physical bearing were so striking to me
that I found myself drawn into creating an image of her
in my work."
