Few people can forget Uhura's famous line, "Hailing frequencies open, Captain," but what many people overlook is that Nichelle was not only the first African American woman cast in the role as a communications officer, but she took part in the first interracial kiss that was aired on television. During her three years stint with Star Trek, Nichelle continued to work actively as a political activist. She credits her decision to stay in the role to a conversation she had with Martin Luther King Jr. Had it not been for his words of encouragement, her time with Trek may have been short, and those of us who were encouraged by her presence may not have been inspired to reach beyond our own expectations.

When the Star Trek show was cancelled in 1969, Nichelle continued to work actively in her career, as well as with NASA as a spokesperson/recruiter. Her participation in the civil rights movement never waned during her time away from Trek.

What can I say about her latest picture except that she gets better and better with each passing year! Not only is she eloquent, but she is a very kind, generous and elegant lady! Never one to stay idle, Nichelle has written several books. Her latest, Saturn's Quest can be purchased at her web site: www.uhura.com.
