No, Ms. Nichelle Nichols was never in Xena. She was, however, the first woman who broke through the
color barrier on television. She is the first great crush that I had as a child. Not only did she help me
come out to myself as a wee child, but as a Woman of Color, Nichelle's portrayal of Communications
Officer Uhura allowed my child's mind to conceive of a future for myself that was outside of the
stereotypical careers. For her portryal of Uhura, I am eternally grateful!
